Burial
What happens at a Burial?
A burial usually takes place after the main funeral ceremony at your chosen burial site. It is important to be aware that the burial itself might be in a separate location to the main funeral service, depending on where this takes place. At many churches, burials are at the vicar’s discretion, so we often carry out burial services at larger cemeteries in Gloucestershire such as Cheltenham Cemetery and Gloucester Cemetery.
We can also arrange for a Natural Burial (also known as a Woodland Burial) to take place on private land or at a natural burial site in Gloucestershire.
The Committal Service
The Committal Service is a short service that usually takes place at the graveside of your loved one. It is usually attended by close family and friends and can include readings and prayers. When the time comes to say goodbye to the deceased, the coffin or casket is lowered into the ground. At this point mourners may scatter soil or throw flowers into the grave.
Graveside-Only Service
We can also arrange graveside-only services which take the place of the main funeral service. Taking place outside, these services tend to be shorter than church or crematorium ceremonies and can have a more personal feel. This is a good consideration for anyone who is thinking about a more eco-friendly type of funeral as there is less mileage, and also fewer associated costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Burial costs in Gloucestershire can vary depending on where the burial takes place. The cost of a burial plot will depend on availability and whether the burial is in a church graveyard or a council-run cemetery. There are other burial costs to take into consideration, such as the fees for opening and reopening graves and replacing headstones. See our Funeral Price page for more information.

Unfortunately, not every church in Gloucestershire allows burials to take place, so this will be up to the vicar’s discretion. At this point, the vicar will look at factors such as the length of time you or your family have lived in the area, and the deceased’s involvement with the church.

There is no right or wrong answer about whether to choose a cremation or burial. Cost may be a deciding factor, in which case, cremation, especially a Direct Cremation, could be a good option. However, a graveside only burial is also a cost-effective funeral service idea. If you are thinking about an Eco-Friendly Funeral, then there are advantages and disadvantages to both cremation and burial which might sway you.
